Individual World Cup Day 5: Anshu has had a phenomenal rise in Indian wrestling. Two years back, owing to her performance at the Cadet level, where she won three World and Asian Championship medals each, she was fast-tracked to Juniors. Even there, the 19-year-old proved her mettle and won a world bronze medal in her debut tournament. Cut to 2020, and Anshu, still 18, won silver and bronze medal respectively in her first two senior-level tournament. And now, she will be finishing her 2020 year on a high note.
Anshu has confirmed a medal after qualifying for the final in the 57kg women’s wrestling in the ongoing Individual World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia. She will face European Champion Macedonia’s Nichita Anastasia.
The Indian wrestler had a slow start to the campaign, winning 4-2 against Azerbaijan’s Alyona Kolesnik. In the Quarterfinal, she defeated Laura Mertens of Germany, followed by a victory by fall against Veronika Chumikova of Russia.
Anastasia, on the other hand, dominated her two bouts against Italy’s Arianna Carieri and Turkey’s Mehlika Otzurk respectively. In both the fights she won on technical superiority.
The final will be held at 10:30 PM IST on MAT B.
