After many postponements and cancellations, the Iran Freestyle Wrestling League finally kicked off October 1. The first round of the event was held in Tehran’s Azadi Hall. It was an unusual environment inside the hall as there was no audience. Moreover, wrestlers and referees keeping in line with the pandemic protocols were seen sporting face-shields. In fact, the referees refrained from removing the shields during the match.
A total of 10 teams will compete in the league in two groups of five. The date of the second round are yet to be announced. Iran Wrestling Federation had earlier said that the schedule will be announced after United World Wrestling (UWW) decided the fate of 2020 world championship.
Olympic and world champ Hassan Yazdani will be representing the Iranian Grand Bazaar team for the new season of wrestling Premier League. Parviz Hadi, Mostafa Hossein Khani, Saeed Dadashpour, Amir Hossein Zare, Amir Hossein Kavousi, Iman Sadeghi and Mohammad Mehdi Yeganeh Jafari were other wrestlers who signed their contracts with the Grand Bazaar team of Iran by attending the Wrestling League.
Meanwhile, 11 teams will compete in the Greco-Roman league but the schedule is yet to be announced.
