Rahul Aware: Will talk to WFI for trials in 57kg

By   - 19/08/2020

Rahul Aware was at the Police Academy training when he received a message from Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The communique was to inform him that he has been shortlisted for the September-bound national camp. However, the thing that made his day was him being amongst the three wrestlers in the 57kg weight category who will be attending the camp. Besides him, Ravi Dahiya and Pankaj have been shortlisted. The Maharashtra wrestler believes that something good is coming his way and it is just the starting. “WFI must have thought of something when they included for the national camp in 57kg. Probably they think that it has been long since Ravi Dahiya has been out of competition so maybe they might hold fresh trials for it to choose the best option for Tokyo Olympics,” he said adding that he might talk to WFI in the future for trials. “Let’s see how it goes, will try from my side, rest it is on WFI to hold fresh trials or not”. Currently, Ravi is India’s top choice for the lightweight category as he secured the quota after winning a bronze medal at 2019 world championship.

The camp will begin from September 1 and will conclude on 30th. The month-long camp for the male grapplers will be held at SAI Sonepat. Rahul who still has two months left to complete his police training will land in Delhi on September 2. As per the protocol, after reaching he will undergo mandatory covid test and resume training after a 14-day quarantine period. The world medallist is excited to join his teammates for training and get back in form before the world championship arrives.

“I think it is the right decision to resume the camp. It has been so long and we need to get back on track. I don’t think there will be any risk as everyone has been training at their respective centres and taking all precautions. So, all they are doing is changing the training base rest remains the same be it safety measures or training regime,” the 2020 Asian Championship bronze medallist said.

Talking about his plans for world championships scheduled for December in Serbia, Aware said that all he needs is to hit the mat again to get the form back. “Just two weeks of mat training is enough for me to get my form back. I have been doing fitness training regularly so a little sparring would be beneficial before the world championships,” he signed off.
