Frank Staebler of Germany will take to the mat against Iuri Lomadze of Georgia in the 72kg Greco Roman finals of the European Championship in Rome. The German ace is competing a category up from the his 67 kg group at the World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, last year.
Staebler entered the finals after defeating Russia’s Adam Kurak. Trailing by 1-0 in the first period, the three-time world champion levelled the score 1-1 in the second period and from there went on to win the match 11-1.
Staebler also is a former European Champion. He had won the competition in 2012. His opponent will be playing his first European final which makes it a battle of ‘Experience vs Inexperience’.
Lomadze kicked off his chase for European Championship gold with a 6-4 win over Serbian Olympian Davor Stefanek. En route to outscored Yury Kankou of Belarus, Dominik Etlinger (Croatia) and Selcuk Can (Turkey).
