Sajan Bhanwal, the only Indian to win two junior World Championship medals, expectedly earned a place in the country’s Greco Roman team for the Under-23 World Championship by emerging champion in the Tata Motors under 23 nationals in Greco-Roman category which concluded here on Sunday.
Greco-Roman Category – SSCB is champion
Sajan won gold in the 77kg. With four gold, two silver and three bronze medals, Services Sports Contro Board (SSCB) took the team championship.
Arjun (55kg), Rajeet (63kg), Rahul (72kg) and Deepak (130kg) won gold for Services.
The only category in which SSCB did not win a medal was 97kg, in which Haryana’s Ravi took gold with a win over Rajasthan’s Pushpendra.
Delhi finished second (170 points) ahead of Haryana (136).
Women Freestyle
Earlier on the second day of the championships, Asian U23 Wrestling Championship 2019 medallists Naina (72kg) and Pooja (76kg) pocketed gold as Haryana easily won the 2nd Tata Motors U-23 National Wrestling Championship women freestyle category. .
10 women’s categories were held on Saturday in which Haryana won 9 medals including 6 gold and 3 bronze medals to climb to the pinnacle of the medal tally. The other four golds were shared by Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
Haryana’s fabulous efforts helped them log 205 points with Delhi following them at 154 points and Uttar Pradesh coming at the third spot with 123 points.
Men Freestyle
The first day of the 3 day championship started with competition in Men’s freestyle in all 10 weight categories. It was tough fight between Haryana and SSCB for the team Championship title. In the end Haryana prevailed over SSCB.

The Gold Medalist wrestlers will represent India in the Under-23 World Wrestling Championship, which will be held at Budapest (Hungary) from 28th October to 3rd November 2019. However, a final trial in 92 kg. between Sikander & Viky will be held next week. Viky is current Silver Asian medalist and has a minor injury. Due to injury, he could not participate in the above Championship.

A total of 500 male and 300 female wrestlers from 28 states have participated in this three-day tournament across 10 weight categories in each of the freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s events.
