Tokyo 2020 postponed: The deferment of Tokyo Olympics to 2021 due to Coronanvirus pandemic has been received well by the sporting circuit. After International Olympic Committee (IOC) made the official announcement on Tuesday, athletes including wrestlers globally welcomed the decision. Two-time World Champion Frank Chamizo praised IOC for taking the ‘tough decision’ of postponing the Summer Games and said will start preparing for 2021.

“Some get too old, others can’t keep up with their diets, others think their time is closing. They made the tough decision to delay the Olympic Games but health comes first. I can’t deny that it hurts me to wait another year but if it’s for the best of global health then 2021 it is,” he wrote on Instagram.

Germany’s three-time World Champion Frank Staebler also welcomed IOC’s verdict. “My Olympic dream has been postponed – not burst. Even if it is currently difficult for me to grasp, it is the absolutely right decision to move the games. In these times we have to think about people’s health, so sport has to be put back. I have learned to deal with imponderables in my career. Let’s tackle it,” he said.

USA’s David Taylor, on the other has reset his goals. The 2018 World Champion took to Instagram and said he is ready for the challenge whenever it comes. “Whenever the day comes, I’ll be ready”.

The 2016 Rio gold medallist Erica Wiebe has said that she is opitimistic and eye Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

“What would you do if you were given the gift of one extra year? #optimism #gratitude #perspective,” she said.

The Russian Tank Abdulrashid Sadulaev, meanwhile has said that all they can do as athletes is train and the rest will be taken care by the “almighty”. “Olympics postponed for a year. For all the Will of the Almighty, we can only train and wait in the wings. The goal remains the same – its implementation is a little delayed!”
