The 30 member Indian team has left for Budapest, Hungary to prove their mettle at the U23 World Wrestling Championships starting from Monday. Before leaving for Budapest, most of the members of the team assembled at the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) office in Delhi. They were handed their India kits by WFI President who also wished them well for the third edition of the U23 World Championship.
India’s record at the U23 World Wrestling
2017 – The first edition of the UWW U23 World Wrestling Championships was held in Poland. Indian wrestlers won 3 silver medals in the inaugural edition. Bajrang Punia won Silver in 65kg, Vinod Kumar won Silver medal in 70kg freestyle category. Ritu Phogat became one and only women for India ever to win U23 World Championship medal by entering the finals of 48kg category where she lost to Even Demirhan of Turkey.
2018 – Unlike 2017, in the second edition in Bucharest, Romania Indian wrestlers could only muster one Silver medal courtesy Ravi Dhaiya in the 57kg.
