UWW World Championship review : India registers best medal haul, but is it good enough ???

By   - 22/09/2019

After high octane action of 9 days the UWW World Wrestling championships 2019 at Nur-Sultan has ended. The championship became witness to some thrilling action, glorious moments, tears of joy and  dejection – all were witnessed these past 9 days. For India too, this world championship brought lot of joys, hope, questions.

Overall, India has enjoyed a fine run at the World Championships with five wrestlers bagging medals and four Olympic quota places being booked. This was the best medal haul for India in the entire history of world wrestling championships. India has never won more than 3 medals at one single world championship, the five medals at Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan were their best haul ever.
India’s medal winners at 2019 world wrestling championship (THE HIGH Points)
 – Bajrang Punia claimed the bronze medal in the 65kg category,
 – Ravi Kumar also won bronze in the 57kg category.
 – Vinesh Phogat was the sole Indian woman wrestler to bag a medal when she won the bronze medal in the 53kg category.
 – Deepak’s silver medal is the best result an Indian wrestler has achieved at this year’s World Championships.
 –  Rahul Aware won a bronze at 61kg weight category

Performance of Indian Men’s freestyle team is the highest point for Indian wrestling at this world championships. Indian Men team performed brilliantly to not only win 1 silver and bronze medals for the country but their team ranking also improved considerably. India ended with team ranking of 5th in the world which means India has qualified for the world cup which will held before the end of the year. Only top 8 teams of the world qualifies in this prestigious event. The only sour point would be Bajrang Punia’s failure to win gold at the championships & Sushil Kumar’s loss in the first round.

Men Freestyle – Team Ranking
2018 Budapest – India finished at 11th place with 40 points
2019 Nur-Sultan – India finished at 5th place with 79 points

The Low Points for India at 2019 World Championships

Women Freestyle – Disappointing performance
Surprisingly the women wrestling which has been bringing laurels for the country in past somehow failed to click at the 2019 world championships. Indian girls with an exception of Vinesh Phoghat and Pooja Dhanda failed to justify the faith reposed in them. Sakshi Malik, Divya Kakran and others performed below par and that resulted in India fairing poorly in the team rankings. Indian team in 2018 was at 8th place and in 2019 they slipped down to 17th.
Women Freestyle – Team Rankings
2018 Budapest – India finished at 8th place with 51 points
2019 Nur-Sultan – India is 17th with just 29 points

Greco-Roman was the biggest disappointment for India. The coaching staff had promised huge improvement in the category before the world championships 2019, but unfortunately they only turned out to be tall claims. The performance was so bad that none of the Indian wrestler finished in the top 15 in their respective weight categories.
In team rankings like last time in Budapest – India finished LAST i.e 33 in the rankings at Nur-Sultan.
