Romania’s Alina Vuc auctioned her wrestling equipment with which she participated at the 2016 Rio Olympics to help the people fight Coronavirus pandemic.
She along with other athletes from Romania like 2008 Beijing Olympic Judoka champion Alina Dumitru and footballer Cosmin Gârleanu amongst others had decided to auction off valuable items to raise money and help in the fight with COVID-19. The amount raised will be used to help protect doctors from the MS Curie Emergency Clinical Hospital.
Vuc is currently the world No.1 in the 50kg women’s wrestling. She has two-time worlds silver medallist and has won three medals at the European Championships – two silver and one bronze. Owing to her medal-winning performance at the 2019 Worlds in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, she has confirmed a place for Romania at the Tokyo Olympics.
One of the biggest sportspeople from Romania, Simona Halep also joined hands to help combat the pandemic. The four-time Wimbledon champion donated 30,000 euros for the cause. ” It’s true, this is the amount, 30,000 euros. I’m not watching the news, but I was staying with my friend, Toni, and I saw how hard it was for everyone. We both decided to donate, it was a moment from the inside,” she told DigiSport Champion.
Meanwhile, other wrestlers are also doing their bit to help the world defeat Coronavirus. While grapplers in Dagestan are going from door-to-door to deliver food and essential food items to the people, Indian wrestlers like Bajrang Punia and Yogeshwar Dutt have donated huge amounts for it.
