Forbes List : Bajrang Punia first wrestler to feature on the highest earnings celebrity list

Indian wrestler had a great 2019. After stupendous show at the world wrestling stage where they won unprecedented 5 world championship medals, Indian wrestlers are now making their presence felt on the commercial pitch as well. Forbes has released their 2019 highest earning Indian celebrity list and for the first time ever a wrestler features in the top 100.
India’s number 1 Wrestler Bajrang Punia debuts at No 94 with earnings of ?2.4 crores. Currently, World No 2 in the 65 kg freestyle category, Punia—who won the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in December and has already qualified for the Toky0 2020 is eyeing an Olympic medal.

Punia had a great year in 2019 which started with Asian Championship Gold in February. The Indian champion then went on to win titles at Yasar Dogu and other ranking series events. He was number 1 wrestler in the world in 65kg till the world wrestling championships in Nur-Sultan where he ended up with Bronze and qualification ticket for Tokyo 2020.
The top earning celebrity list is headed by Virat Kohli at number 1 position with earnings of more than 250 Cr in 2019 followed by Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan. Kohli topping the 2019 Forbes India Celebrity 100 List is an indication of the popularity of cricket in India. However, other sportspersons to are earning accolades and reaping the benefits of fame
Footballer Sunil Chhetri returns at No 85, with earnings of ?6.1 crores this year. Olympic medallist Mary Kom also makes a comeback. The boxer is ranked 87 with earnings of ?3.9 crores.

Badminton players the biggest loserHowever, it was a tough year for badminton players. PV Sindhu’s earnings dropped from ?36.5 crores in 2018 to ?21.05 crore, resulting in her ranking slipping from 20 to 63. But she remains the highest-paid non-cricket sportsperson on the list. Saina Nehwal’s earnings also took a serious hit: From ?16.54 crore in 2018 to ?3 crores this year. Srikanth Kidambi who was on the list since 2017 has dropped off this year.

Golfer Anirban Lahiri and tennis player Rohan Bopanna’s earnings also saw a significant drop. Lahiri’s fell from ?11.99 crores (2018) to ?5.3 crores (2019) while Bopanna’s is ?1.87 crore (2019) from ?3.27 crore (2018). Boxer Vijender Singh and golfer Shubhankar Sharma, who were on the 2018 list at ranks 96 and 98 respectively, don’t find a place this year.
