The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has named more than 100 senior wrestlers for the national camp starting from today in Sonepat for Men and in Lucknow for the women wrestlers. WFI has decided that this will be the core group of wrestlers from which Indian teams for the forthcoming Asian Wrestling Championships in Delhi, Asian Olympic Qualifiers in China and finally squad for Tokyo 2020 will be finalized. The list of the national campers released by WFI includes all the four wrestlers who have already grabbed the Tokyo 2020 quota place i.e Vinesh Phogat (53kg), Bajrang Punia (65kg), Ravi Dhaiya (57kg) & Deepak Punia (86kg).
According to the WFI Office Secretary, Vinod Tomar it will be mandatory for all the selected wrestlers to attend the national camp.
“WFI has included all Jalandhar Senior National Championship medallists, prominent squad members of the U23 world championships and all the senior Indian team players who could not play in the senior nationals due to an injury or any another valid reason are included in the camp list. We are making it mandatory for this core group to attend the national camp” said Tomar.
As reported earlier, the WFI will conduct the trials to select the Indian squad for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers scheduled for March 2020 in the first week of January. India has already booked quota places in 3 Men’s freestyle categories (57kg, 65kg & 86kg) and 1 quota place in the women freestyle in 53kg courtesy Vinesh Phogat.
This means quota places for 3 categories in Men’s Freestyle (74kg, 97kg, 125kg), 5 in women FS (50kg, 57kg, 62kg, 68kg, 76kg) and in all 6 weight categories of Greco-Roman are still up for grab. Indian wrestlers will have two chances to book quota places in these remaining categories, the first one at the Asian Olympic qualifiers in China in March and the World Olympic Qualifiers in Sofia, Bulgaria in April.
The national body through these trials in January will select the Indian squads for the Olympic Qualifier tournaments and the Asian Wrestling Championships in New-Delhi.
WFI has only exempted marquee wrestler Bajrang Punia from the Asian Championship trials. WrestlingTV has reliably learnt that Deepak Punia (86kg) and Ravi Dhaiya (57kg) & even Vinesh Phogat will have to appear for trials in order to make it to the Indian squad for the Asian Championships. The performance in the trials is unlikely to effect their already booked tickets for Tokyo 2020.
