One of the most well known wrestling competitions of the world, the Continental Cup starts in Khasavyurt, Russia from today. The fan-fare of the past is all gone but the tournament still has been able to attract some of the top athletes from host Russia, USA and other European countries. The 11th Intercontinental Cup will bring together more than 200 wrestlers from more than a dozen countries.
History of Intercontinental Cup
This International freestyle wrestling competition in Khasavyurt started in 1999 as an individual freestyle wrestling event. In 2009 the organizers announced major changes and tried building this tournament as showdown between the top continental winner teams. The name given to the event was Intercontinental Cup. But this format could stay-in only for 3 years as the organizers struggled with getting top foreign teams for the event. Now once again the tournament is back as individual wrestling competition
