2017 – World Junior Championships Bronze
2018 – World Junior Championships Silver
2019 – World Junior Championships Bronze
With all being said, Sajan Bhanwal made his first senior debut at the World U23 championship at Bucharest, Romania in 2018. Though, the expectation wasn’t huge considering Greco-Roman history in the past but Sajan made a blistering start to his senior circuit by entering into semi-finals of 77kg weight category in an emphatic manner before losing to reigning U23 Champion Cataraga, who made history later in the tournament by becoming first wrestler to win back-to-back U23 World Titles.
Sajan got a chance via repechage, but the bronze medal bout was not an easy one for him as he lost to Russia’s Ismail Saidkhasanov in a closely fought match where the scores tied at 5-5 when Russian earned all important one point by pushing Sajan out of the wrestling area to take the lead and held on to the one point advantage to shatter Sajan’s dream of winning medals in both junior and senior worlds by winning the bronze medal bout narrowly with a scoreline of 6-5.
Despite the loss in bronze medal bout of U23 World wrestling championship, Sajan Bhanwal showed signs to be a poster boy of India’s Greco-Roman wrestling in the future. Though Wrestling is quite popular in India, still Greco-Roman style of wrestling finds hard time to even exist in the country.
