2017 – World Junior Championships Bronze

2018 – World Junior Championships Silver
2019 – World Junior Championships Bronze

20 year old Sajan Bhanwal is the only Indian wrestler to win 3 consecutive world championship medals in the Junior categories. These medals become more significant, as they have come in India’s least favored category of wrestling i.e Greco-Roman form of wrestling. This performance has given Sajan the tag of India’s biggest hope in the Greco-Roman wrestling. Now Sajan is standing at a doorstep of history. One more medal and he can become India’s first wrestlers to win 4 world championship medals in all categories combine.
Can he win his fourth World Championship medal ?
Young Sajan will be representing India at the UWW U23 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest starting from 28th October. Once again Sajan will be India’s biggest hope at the world event. He narrowly lost the bronze medal in the last edition of the U23 but is all geared up for a medal this time. If that happens, he can create history of sorts. History of winning the most number of world championship medals for India in all age groups combine.
Sajan already has 3 world championship medal to his credit at the Junior World Championships in 2017 / 2018 & 2019. He also became the first Indian ever to win the Junior World Championship medal in the Greco-Roman category in 2017
U23 World Championships 2018, Bucharest – Romania

With all being said, Sajan Bhanwal made his first senior debut at the World U23 championship at Bucharest, Romania in 2018. Though, the expectation wasn’t huge considering Greco-Roman history in the past but Sajan made a blistering start to his senior circuit by entering into semi-finals of 77kg weight category in an emphatic manner before losing to reigning U23 Champion Cataraga, who made history later in the tournament by becoming first wrestler to win back-to-back U23 World Titles.

Sajan got a chance via repechage, but the bronze medal bout was not an easy one for him as he lost to Russia’s Ismail Saidkhasanov in a closely fought match where the scores tied at 5-5 when Russian earned all important one point by pushing Sajan out of the wrestling area to take the lead and held on to the one point advantage to shatter Sajan’s dream of winning medals in both junior and senior worlds by winning the bronze medal bout narrowly with a scoreline of 6-5.

Despite the loss in bronze medal bout of U23 World wrestling championship, Sajan Bhanwal showed signs to be a poster boy of India’s Greco-Roman wrestling in the future. Though Wrestling is quite popular in India, still Greco-Roman style of wrestling finds hard time to even exist in the country.

What is Greco-Roman form of Wrestling ?

In this form of wrestling, participants are required to use their upper bodies to execute a variety of different moves to pin their opponent and/or score points in order to win the fight. One of the main differences with the Freestyle wrestling is that Greco-Roman forbids any holds below the waist, but freestyle wrestling allows you to use your legs as both defensive and offensive weapons.
