It seems training at the foreign locations is the flavor of the December month for the Indian wrestlers. 2020 being a Olympic year, Indian wrestlers are not leaving any stone unturned for preparing themselves for the year ahead.
Earlier WrestlingTV had reported that 2019 World championship medallist Vinesh Phogat is in Bulgaria for the sub-zero temperature training and now the Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik has also opted for training in the foreign location.
Sakshi is currently in the Colorado Springs, USA for 15 days training camp at the Fort Carson Army base. Malik’s husband and fellow wrestler Satyawart Kadian has also accompanied her to Colorado. Both husband-wife duo are training under the watchful eyes of Georgian coach Jakob Makarashvili.
Sakshi and Satyawart spoke to WrestlingTV from their training base in Colorado.
“We have come to Colorado as the center has some of the best facilities. I am training as hard as possible to make myself physically fit for the challenges of Tokyo 2020 Qualifications” said Sakshi.
Sakshi’s husband and new crowned national champion in 97kg Kadian also has Tokyo 2020 qualifications on his mind. “I am wrestling well and now aiming for Tokyo 2020 Qualifications. It will be extremely challenging year. I just want to give my best shot and decided to make Colorado my training base fo the next 15 days” said Kadian to WrestlingTV.
Sakshi has a very average 2019 where she won the National championship crown once again but in the international arena things did not go her way. In the UWW World Wrestling Championships in Nur-Sultan the Indian champion unexpectedly lost out in the opening round to the Nigerian opponent. In the other global ranking events as well Sakshi could not perform as per the expectations. In order to qualify for Tokyo 2020, Sakshi still has two chances, the first in the month of March in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in China and than in April the World Qualifiers in the April 2020.
Indian wrestling fans will hope that Sakshi regains her form in time to not only qualify for Tokyo 2020 but also once again make the country proud at Tokyo as she did in Rio 2016.
