U23 World Championships : Canada looking to better medal tally at Budapest

By   - 16/10/2019

The world of wrestling is gearing up for the UWW U23 World Championships in Budapest. Wrestling Canada is sending a team of nineteen athletes to the U23 World Championships taking place October 28 to November 1

It will be the third edition of the championships after being launched in 2017. Canada captured three medals in the first two years of the tournament.

Last year, Alex Town became the first Canadian to win gold at a U23 World Championships. The York wrestler won the 57 kg weight-class by defeating Japan’s Akie Hanai in the gold medal bout.

In 2017, Gracelynn Doogan and Braxton Papadopoulos took home silver medals at the first edition of the U23 World Championships. Doogan will be looking to reach the podium again at this year’s event.

Four members of the team competed for Canada at this year’s Senior World Championships in Kazakhstan in September. Darthe Capellan, Alex Moore, Jade Dufour, and Hannah Taylor will all look to use their experience at the senior level to help them advance.

The Canadian team also includes two Junior World Championship medallists. Aly Barghout took silver at 125 kg at the 2018 championships, and Nishan Randhawa captured bronze at 96 kg in 2015.
