India’s Veer Dev Gulia had a heart-breaking loss in the bronze medal bout on the day 2 of the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest. 22 year old Gulia was pitted against 2 time European U23 champion Radik Valiev of Russia in the battle of bronze. Gulia started little slowly which resulted in early 5-0 lead for the Russian. Despite of comeback from Gulia in the last 2 mins where he scored 4 points but failed to overtake the Russian and eventually lost the battle of bronze.
India is yet to officially open their medal account at the championship though Ravinder entering the finals of 61kg category, India is assured of minimum silver medal on the Day3.
Earlier Gulia’s good run was halted in the semi-finals of the 79kg freestyle category late Monday night on the Day1. Gulia tried his best but still he was no match for the Abubakr Abakarov of Azerbaijan in his Semi-Finals bout. 2018 World Junior runners up Abakarov won the bout 8-1 against Gulia to book his place in finals.
In the quarterfinals, Gulia defeated DAMJIN Batzul of Mongolia in one-sided bout by 11-1 and China’s Ligan Chai in the last 16 match-up. Gulia who hails from Jhajjar, Haryana showed his real power and strength against the Chinese. Gulia performed brilliantly to outwit the Chinese by 7-2 to book a place in the last 8 of the world championships. In the opening round, Gulia got better of the host country wrestler Lukacs Botond. In a hard fought bout Gulia prevailed 3-1 against the local hope.
India’s record at the U23 World Wrestling – Past 2 editions
In the past two editions India won 3 silver medal in 2017 & 1 silver in 2018 edition of the championship.
2017 – The first edition of the UWW U23 World Wrestling Championshipswas held in Poland. Indian wrestlers won 3 silver medals in the inaugural edition. Bajrang Punia won Silver in 65kg, Vinod Kumar won Silver medal in 70kg freestyle category. Ritu Phogat became one and only women for India ever to win U23 World Championship medal by entering the finals of 48kg category where she lost to Even Demirhan of Turkey.
2018 – Unlike 2017, in the second edition in Bucharest, Romania Indian wrestlers could only muster one Silver medal courtesy Ravi Dhaiya in the 57kg.
