The global body for the sport of wrestling, United World Wrestling (UWW) has now released the list of best wrestlers of 2019 in the Under 23 Category. In the men’s freestyle, women and Greco-Roman categories, the best wrestler award has gone to wrestlers who have won the U23 crown for the second consecutive time.
>Mojtaba GOLEIJ of Iran was named United World Wrestling’s U23 Freestyle Wrestler of the Year. The Iranian seized his second U23 world title while scoring an 8-6 win over reigning U23 world champion Givi MATCHARASHVILI of Georgia en route to the 97kg gold medal in the Budapest world championships.
U23 Women Wrestler of the Year
Paliha PALIHA of China was named United World Wrestling’s U23 Women’s Wrestler of the Year. Like Goleij, Paliha also won her second consecutive U23 world gold at the world championships. Paliha defeated an age-group world medalist in four straight matches on her way to the 76kg title.

The best Greco-Roman wrestler for the Under23 category award went to Mohamed ELSAYED of Egypt. El Sayed captured his second straight U23 world title in 2019. The Egyptian wrestler averaged over nine points in each of his five matches in Budapest.
Honoka NAKAI (JPN) has been named the Cadet Women’s Wrestler of the Year. Nakai won her second straight cadet world title while out scoring her four #WrestleSofia opponents 24-1. India also had world champions in the category as Komal (40kg) and Sonam (65kg) also won the cadet world championship golds in 2019 but missed out on the awards as Nakai had won the title twice.

Nihat MAMMADLI (AZE) was named the Cadet Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year. The Azeri improved on his world silver from a year ago and won titles at this year’s Cadet World and European Championships.
Turkey’s ?? Kerem KAMAL was named United World Wrestling’s Junior Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year after capturing his third junior world title.
Punia is currently ranked number 1 in the UWW rankings of 86kg category and will be India’s big hope at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Earlier Punia has also won the Cadet World Championships gold in 2016.
