World Wrestling Champion Jaden Cox’s dilemma, should switch be 86kg or 97kg ??

By   - 16/10/2019

Just fortnight ago, the wonder wrestler, Jaden Cox won the world championship crown in Nur-Sultan in the 92kg weight category. This was Jadens second world title. With celebrations done, 24-year-old Columbia, Missouri native Cox has to now take one of the biggest decision of his life. Decision, which can seal his fate for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Despite of winning the world championship title for the second consecutive time, the biggest question in front of Cox is how to fit into the United States men’s freestyle lineup in 2020. The 92kg category is not a Olympic category, which means Cox has to either make the switch to 97kg or move down to 86kg weights in order to make it to the Tokyo 2020.

Decision between switch to 97kg or 86kg ??

The two-time 92-kilogram World champ will soon announce his plan for the Olympic year. He’s deliberating whether to cut back down to 86 kilograms or make the climb to 97 kilos.

Either-way path for Tokyo 2020 will not be easy for the two time world champ. If he moves down to 86kg, he will have to compete with David Taylor for an Olympic spot at 86 kilograms for an opportunity to take on three-time World and Olympic champ Hassan Yazdanicharati of Iran. This is the same category where India’s new wrestling wonder, Deepak Punia has booked his place for the Olympics.

If Cox climbs up to 97kg, he will have to battle out with none other than Kyle Snyder for a place in USA team. And if he wins, he can have a shot at five-time World and Olympic champ Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia.

In an interview to Trackwrestling, Cox has agreed this will be one of the biggest challenge of his wrestling career.

“There’s a lot of factors that go into it,” Cox said. “I think the biggest one for me is the legacy thing. I think also the matches that I want — what I want to do, who I want to face — will go into it. I think overall what will benefit me and help me excel as a wrestler to become the best I can possibly be, those are all factors in my decision, and it’s not an easy one because the guys on either side are great talents and the weight classes are filled with depth. I’m excited for the decision. It’s not a decision that I dread. When you have multiple doors to walk through it’s never a bad thing.”

The wrestling world will wait for Cox’s decision as there’s no way around it. The Olympic-year pruning of weight classes from 10 to six means whatever the Cox’s decision may be the United States will leave a World champ or two home next summer when the Americans take off for Tokyo.
